Be your Own Boss
Franchisors myth - Be your own Boss"But in today's marketplace, franchising is almost never business ownership, and it is very often not a safe and secure path." He explains that buying a franchise means buying a license to operate someone else's business for the period of the contract."
From the book "The Franchise Fraud"
Have you ever thought to yourself "I am sick of my job", "I hate my boss", I am sick of working for other people." You would like to be your own boss and control your corporate destiny. If you have ever thought along those lines, then the thought of buying a franchise can be very appealing, but who will you really be working for?
"Franchising flatters before the signing and threatens after, and the tipping point is your awareness of the trick."
The franchisor will have you believe you are working for yourself and in control of you own destiny as their sales brochures advertise. This is nothing more than marketing hype. The reality is much different. Not only are you not buying a franchise, you really rent it for a period. You are buying yourself a managerial job. You will by tied in by the franchisors rules and regulations which have many restrictions. You will only be able to buy stock and products from their "approved vendors". This is because everything you buy gives them a commission (kickback). This means you are unable to shop around for the best prices.
Working as an employee for a company can sometimes require long hours, as a franchisee you will work even longer hours, you will more often than not be the first one in and the last one out. You will have to not only handle daily operations of running a business, you will do additional work behind the scenes long after the doors are closed. Paperwork, hiring, firing employees, managing supplies, covering extra shifts when employees are sick and guess who gets paid first after all of this? The franchisor, NOT you.
Not matter what you are told - when you buy a franchise and hand over your money, you now have a new boss - The franchisor, who calls the shots, you are effectively middle management. You put your money and family assets at risk (not theirs). You are just a manager for the franchisor, you take all the risks to build the franchisors security. You will NOT be your own boss.
The franchisor dictates the terms, tells you what you can and can't do. The bottom line is you are not in control of you own business as the franchisor manages from the top down.
